Teacher Biography

Dear Families,
I am super excited to be joining your child on their educational journey. This is an exciting time for your child and an important part of setting up future success in school. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Mejia and I will be your child’s teacher for this school year here at East Jackson Elementary. I am a Jackson native and Jackson High School graduate. From there I went on to Lansing Community College and Jackson Community College to earn an Associate of Arts. I transferred to Spring Arbor University where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies with a focus on Elementary and Middle School Education.

I am blessed with a wonderful family that consists of my husband Jason and our three awesome kiddos, Ellery, Kennedy and Peter. We have a feisty calico cat named Bella. In my free time I enjoy going out to restaurants, attending concerts, and sporting events. Last but certainly not least, I am a frog fanatic!!!

I look forward to getting to know each student and supporting them in their learning. You as a parent, are your child’s original teacher. You are the greatest influence in their lives. Therefore, I would like to invite you to let me know a little about your child by writing me a note or sending an email that describes your child. How would you describe him or her as a learner and as a person? What are the things that you as a parent know would be important for me to know? Communication is the key to success at school. Students are much more successful when parents and teachers work together, and I look forward to working with each of you. I will be communicating with you daily using the student agendas. It is my hope that you will also check agendas daily and sign them each night. I will also communicate via newsletters, e-mail, website, text messages with the Remind app (free for smart phones) and phone calls. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns by phone at 517-764-1810, by e-mail at jessica.mejia@eastjacksonschools.org , message me on Remind, or by writing me a note in the student agenda.

I appreciate your participation in your child’s education, it truly makes a difference. It is going to be a fabulous year!

Sincerely,

Jessica Mejia

P.S. Being a new school year we do have a wish list. Room 119 would love to be able to "battle the bug" before it starts with donations of Lysol, Clorox wipes and Kleenex. I also accept healthy snack donations for students who forget or can't afford to bring snack. Thank you for your help and support!

Dream it! Believe it! Achieve it!

My Teaching Philosophy
I believe teaching is a life-long learning process and regardless of one’s years of experience, there is always room for improvement. In a world that is so fast paced, it is crucial for teachers to be open-minded and receptive to new ideas and styles of teaching. No two students ever learn the same way and as educators we need to adapt and experiment daily.

I believe in having a safe, welcoming and nurturing classroom environment that fits the diverse needs of all students. Every student deserves a calm and comfortable, yet stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my goal as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that supports risk-taking, invites the sharing of ideas and encourages self-discovery. My classroom is a place where all students can learn without fear of failure and a place where they can succeed based on their individual efforts and talents. All students have the capability for knowledge and learning, and they deserve their education to be in an encouraging and supportive environment. My classroom is a place where all diversities (academic, cultural, economic, etc.) are embraced and celebrated.

I am empathetic and compassionate towards my students, but I also hold them to high standards to ensure they reach their fullest potential. My goal is for them to be able to apply everything they learn to their everyday lives. It is my goal to develop a curriculum that will foster intrinsic motivation and stimulate their passion to be life-long learners. To help reach this goal, I will use differentiated instruction. I understand each child is a unique individual with diverse academic needs and abilities. I will strive to incorporate a wide variety of kinesthetic, hands-on and technology-based activities in my classroom. I know tailoring my teaching style to fit the particular needs of my classroom will create ample learning opportunities for every student. In closing, I will lead by example by expressing my dedication to teaching, and conveying my passion for learning.
